Terms of Service
Last updated: May 4, 2026 · Effective for all users
1. Acceptance of these terms
By using Mapleproof — whether registering for a customer pass, scanning a pass as a retailer, or browsing this website — you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not use the service.
2. Eligibility
You may use Mapleproof only if you are at least 18 years old (the minimum tier we support). For purchases of cannabis, alcohol, or tobacco in Ontario, you must additionally be 19 or older as required by provincial law. You must use a valid, unexpired, genuine government-issued photo ID. Use of forged, altered, or someone else's ID is a criminal offence and grounds for immediate account termination.
3. Account responsibilities
You are responsible for:
- Providing accurate, current, and complete information
- Keeping your barcode token confidential — anyone with your barcode could attempt to use your pass
- Notifying us promptly if you suspect unauthorized use
- Re-registering if your government ID changes (renewal, name change, etc.)
4. What Mapleproof does and doesn't do
What it does
- Reads the AAMVA-format barcode on your provincial ID
- Calculates your age tier (19+ / 25+) live, on every scan
- Captures your face and verifies it via a liveness challenge
- Compares your live face to the photo on your ID
- Issues a barcode that retailers can scan to see this verification result
What it doesn't do
- It does not authorize sales. A successful scan is information; the cashier still must check your ID.
- It does not verify the authenticity of your physical ID document.
- It does not guarantee acceptance at any retailer. Each retailer makes their own decision.
- It does not replace any legal requirement under Ontario, federal, or municipal law.
5. Retailer obligations
If you are using Mapleproof as a retailer:
- You must hold valid AGCO authorization for the products you sell
- You must train your staff to inspect physical ID at every transaction, regardless of Mapleproof scan result
- You must not use Mapleproof as your sole age-verification method
- You agree that monetary penalties under Ontario's Schedule of Monetary Penalties (up to $100,000 per violation) and license consequences for sales to minors remain your responsibility
- You must not share your retailer API key with anyone outside your authorized staff
- You must notify us within 24 hours of any suspected compromise of your retailer credentials
6. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use someone else's ID or photo
- Submit fake, altered, or forged documents
- Scrape, reverse-engineer, or attempt to bypass our security measures
- Use the service to harass, defraud, or harm any other person
- Resell or redistribute access to the service without written permission
- Use the service in any jurisdiction where it is not legal to do so
Violations result in immediate account termination and may be reported to law enforcement.
7. Disclaimer of warranties
Mapleproof is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent permitted by Canadian law, we disclaim all warranties — express, implied, statutory, or otherwise — including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement.
We do not warrant that:
- The service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or available at all times
- Face matching or liveness detection is infallible
- The service will detect every fraudulent or altered ID
- The service will be compatible with every device or browser
8. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Mapleproof's total liability for any claim arising from or related to your use of the service is limited to the amount you have paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim, or CAD $50 if you have paid nothing.
We are not liable for:
- Sales-to-minors violations or fines incurred by retailers
- Lost profits, business interruption, or consequential damages
- Decisions made by retailers based on our scan results
- Acts or omissions of third parties (including ID document issuers)
Some jurisdictions don't allow limitations on certain liabilities; in those cases, our liability is limited to the maximum extent permitted by applicable law.
9. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold Mapleproof harmless from any claim, loss, or liability arising from your violation of these terms, your misuse of the service, or your violation of any applicable law.
10. Termination
You may terminate your account at any time via /delete. We may suspend or terminate your account if we believe you have violated these terms, used the service fraudulently, or that termination is required by law. Sections 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, and 12 survive termination.
11. Changes to these terms
We may revise these terms periodically. Material changes will be announced on the home page. Continued use of the service after changes constitutes acceptance.
12. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of Ontario, Canada. Any dispute will be resolved in the courts of Ontario, except where applicable consumer protection law gives you the right to bring proceedings in your local jurisdiction.
